Self described “design nomad” Silas Munro stopped by the grad studios to offer the MFA 2 design students some advice as they start their thesis projects. Silas is the Chair of the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts, and prior to that was the Design Director at Housing Works in New York. Silas’s own thesis helped identify and shape his future practice, especially the direction of his studio poly:mode.

Silas is currently working on M:O:S (Miami : Open : Source) a long-term project, partially funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, that is examining how to use technology as a tool in the arts to empower and benefit underserved communities in Miami. The grant is in it’s first of three years and has reached a quarter of its match. M:O:S held its first workshop, resulting in the creation of a visual identity, with the neighborhood of Wynwood this past summer.
